A not-for-profit dedicated to educating about Jewish genetic disease screening.
The Canavan Foundation was formed in 1992 by friends and family of a child with Canavan disease. The goal was to develop accurate carrier and prenatal tests for the disease. This was accomplished in 1994. Since then 37 additional disease have been added to the "Ashkenazi" panel, and screening for Sephardic and Mizrahi diseases is also available. We stress the importance of preconception screening so if a carrier couple is identified, the couple can avail themselves of various reproductive technologies now available so they can be assured of having children who are not plagued by any of these many diseases.
